Field Good Farms is a small-scale ecological fruit and vegetable farm which operates on a beautiful 43 acre farm in Cache Bay, Ontario.
We cultivate 3.5 acres for vegetable production, which includes 3 crop greenhouses, 1 seedling greenhouse, 2 caterpillar tunnels and field production.

Summer Student - Vegetable Farm Team Member (2 positions)
This opportunity will be open until March 1, 2023 or until filled.
1. Position summary
Perform tasks associated with production of high quality organic produce at Field Good Farms by applying sustainable approaches to the care, planting, harvesting and preparation for delivery of all farm products to clients in order to feed families and within the spirit of a community mandate.
2. Major Responsibilities
A) Vegetable and Fruit Production
Preparation of soil for planting.
Seeding, repotting, and transplanting in greenhouse, caterpillar tunnels, and fields.
Weeding, trellising and pruning in fields, caterpillar tunnels, and greenhouses.
B) Harvesting and Preparation
Harvesting vegetables according to the harvest picklists.
Washing, sorting, packing and storing produce according to procedures.
Preparing and packaging fruits and vegetables for timely delivery to CSA clients and wholesale clients.
C) Care of Work Tools and Environment
Cleaning and safe storage of tools.
Cleaning of vegetable containers, work surfaces, and spaces used for production on the farm.
D) Other
Working at other tasks associated with general farm operations. These may include, but are not limited to, care of trees and perennials, use of mechanical equipment, greenhouse chores, etc.
3. Skills
Able to follow directions when performing tasks in all aspects of production.
Ability to apply plant care practices by consistently following best management practices and processes provided by Field Good Farms.
Capacity to develop mental muscle to perform repetitive tasks with increasing rapidity.
Following all health and safety practices required on the farm.
4. Knowledge
Basic knowledge and experience of farm work and production is an asset.
Keen interest and knowledge of ecological farming practices.
5. Requirements
A positive attitude and willingness to work hard performing manual labour.
6. Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Working outside in the field, in greenhouses and high tunnels in all types of weather including cold and hot temperatures.
Lifting of heavy items such as produce containers.
Requires use of appropriate clothing and protective wear.
Working with various tools and applying safe use practices and storage.
Expected on occasion, but only if absolutely necessary, to work extra hours in order to finish work tasks (ie: harvesting required due to expected weather conditions).
Experience:
An interest in any of the following fields is an asset: arboriculture, ecological agriculture, restoration agriculture, environmental restoration, or horticulture.
The successful candidate will be available to work to following:
- 10 hours/week starting May 22, 2023 for a period of 6 consecutive weeks
- 35 hours/week starting July 3, 2023 for a period of 9 consecutive weeks
- 10 hours/week starting September 4, 2023 for a period of 6 consecutive weeks
We are looking for someone who is respectful, efficient, has a great team spirit, and who is happy to spend time outdoors doing hard work.
Other requirements:
The successful candidate will wear appropriate work clothes and be able to provide their own transportation to get to the farm, which is located in a rural area.
This position is conditional upon funding approval through a Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) grant.
The candidates must be between the ages of 15-30 and a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada or a refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
Pay rate:
$ 17.50 / hour
